The earliest evidence of coffee drinking is in the 15th century in the Sufi monasteries of the Yemen in southern Arabia. Coffee was initially used as a substitute for wine in spiritual practices where alcohol was forbidden. It was later brought to Venice, where it was introduced to the rest of Europe.

Coffee contains a number of antioxidants which aid in preventing cell deterioration due to free radicals. It also may serve to reduce the risk of dementia and certain brain diseases. However it increases the risk of acid reflux and associated diseases. In mothers and infants it can also result in iron deficiency anemia.

Coffee contains caffeine, which is a natural pesticide used in plants to kill insects. In humans, caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, eliminating drowsiness. Caffeine is an antagonist of the neurotransmitter adenosine and regular consumption results in the formation of many more adenosine receptors, which may cause cravings if the caffeine intake is reduced.
